my buddy

My cube buddy, office neighbor, just got back from lunch and plopped a bag of black licorice between our desks to share. Yes!!!

He is from Egypt and most foreigners that I know love black licorice.

I also love black licorice, but I an not eating sweets.

I'll only eat two, maybe three.

Never cared for black licorice

I usually accept anything unhealthy at work whether I like it or not.

Black licorice is ok if I am in the right mood.

does black licorice tast the same as those black jelly beans?

Not really - it's an imitation of the flavor, but not quite the same. I don't like black jelley beans.

I believe the licorice flavor comes from the Anise root. And if you ever drink Anise, like tea, it has the same flavor as the licorice. My Eygptian friend recently came back from visiting his homeland and brought a box of Anise tea bags and it was yummy!

I don't mind a hint of anise in tea or cookies, but don't like black licorice. In my opinion it is not subtle at all. Muy fuerte, actually. (very strong)
