Random thoughts and activities from the weekend:

  • I had quite a mess of leaves in my yard. My neighborhood looks like one of those scenes from a romantic comedy where the couple is walking and talking, maybe there is a dog on a leash, sweaters are being worn – and it is snowing leaves! I took a moment to look up and watch the leaves fall.
  • The neighbors on both sides of me have cleaned their yard several times. One bags them and the other hires a company to vacuum them up. I do not have the time or money to keep up. Their yards look great! Nice and green, void of any leaves. Half a day later, their yards look like mine. I took about an hour to mow the lawn and mulch the leaves into tiny little pieces. My yard looked great, nice and green. No bagging, no money spent other than gas for the mower. A few hours later, my work was all covered up. I hope my neighbors noticed, briefly.
  • I have gutter guards to keep leaves out of my gutters. I also have a locust tree that has tiny golden leaves that find there way past my gutter guards. I clean out my gutters by climbing a ladder onto my roof and then taking a garden hose and spraying the leaves down the drain. That technique works pretty well, but I wonder if the gutter guards are worth it.
  • This has been the best Fall season ever. The weather has been perfect and the trees are beautiful.
  • I know it’s not cool to like Christmas music and all the commercialization of Christmas, but I started listening to Christmas music this weekend. I love to belt it out in the car. I see the decorations being prepared on the streets and in the shops and I am excited for my favorite time of the year. There’ll be much mistletoeing…
  • I went to one of my absolute favorite stores in town. The Moon Marble Company. Well, actually it is in Bonner Springs, but that makes for a fun drive. There is nothing flashy about the store that is by the tracks and would be easily missed if you didn’t see the sign. But what is on the inside will delight and keep you busy for hours. Every year for my boys’ birthday, we go to the store and pick out a hand-made marble. I want to leave them with a gift that has lasted through the generations and will still be a classic toy for future generations. They have in-store demonstrations of how they make this big colorful marbles. The store itself comes from a different era, before the kay-be toys and the Toys’r’us. The walls are crammed, the aisles are tight, and navigating seems like going through a maze. The toys and games are very retro. My mom even said she hadn’t seen one of those since she was a kid. The have a great collection of brain-teaser puzzles like Rush Hour. Moon Marble is great place to stop before a long roadtrip – to have the kids pick out a travel game or two. Much fun!
  • Saturday night all of my family watched my cousin-niece, Laina perform in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was a fun time, maybe someday my boys will want to act in musicals. It looks like fun.
  • I have been reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire a lot this weekend. When I start a new book, I read it casually. There may be a few days that I don’t have time to pick it up and read. But once the story gets going (about half way) I have a hard time putting it down and find myself grabbing the book before I turn on mindless TV.
  • My cousin Sean and his wife were in town, so we all went over to Seminole and Magrelo’s house for dinner. Always a fun time when we get all the family together. My sister Lou Lou and Seminole who is Greek are going to start teaching some family dances for our family culture, so when our kids get married, we’ll have one big party going on. I asked if we could start with the electric slide.
  • My VCR broke this weekend. We are still behind the times. We don’t have cable nor Tivo, so we tape all our shows, because they are on when we put the boys to bed. I bought a new VCR last night at Wal-Mart. They only had one to choose from. $40. DVD players are cheaper! Wal-Mart was cheaper than the other stores. Don’t worry we are now caught up on Lost and Alias.

my brother sal read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in exactly two days when he first got here. He couldn't put the book down. I made fun of him for liking it so much. i tease him about harry potter because i think harry's evil, and he is totally in love with creepy harry...

That's amazing!
I have never read a book quickly, but a least I read.

When is Sal coming back. We miss him.

What's not to love about Harry? I love underdog stories and people with good moral fiber.

gigi said...

I know. Sal is psycho when it comes to reading...

To be honest... i really don't know anything about harry potter except that his movies and books look creepy, so I guess I'm just not interested. And I also know that some christians are creeped out by him and some love him. I don't really know and i guess I just really don't care. I'm interested in other kind of stuff, I guess.

Salvatore will be home in 5 days! Yippy! We all totally miss him too. He says he anxious to get back. Just in time for the holiday season! He really likes your sunday school class!

We bought a VCR almost two years ago. We had to look hard to find one that wasn't a VCR/DVD combo. They're going out of style like film cameras.

pssshhh. it's not evil. most people that say that haven't even read a book to base it on....

I love that book! it's my very favorite one and I've probably read it at least 5 times. me and my friends are pretty obsessed with the whole harry potter thing, and my mom loves it too. (and has no objections, if that tells you anything....) haha. I'm sooo excited for the movie! I'm hopefully going at midnight w/ josh and his gf. your post makes me want to forget my hw and just read the 6th book all over again!

and that marble place sounds sweet. I loved marbles as a kid, in indonesia we went to a really awesome school with a huge courtyard where all the kids played marbles.

oohhh and sorry that this comment is more like a post. lol.

gigi,
different things creep out different people. Like Darlene Z. from hillsong creeps me out. Really, since when does a worship leader become a celebrity??? :)

Purple Rain,
Missed you in class. You would totally love the Moon Marble. There are so many cool things in that store.

My old office designed the new village west Legend's theater which has the towns largest screen. The grand opening is this week and they are showing Harry Potter on the big screen.

Moon Marble sounds great! I think we will be stopping there before Christmas to prepare for our New Year's in Texas.

It would be so much fun if your boys were in musicals. Goose and Squirrel can star together.

it's not evil. most people that say that haven't even read a book to base it on....

exactly, don't read the book that tells you the evils of Harry Potter. Read the real thing and think for yourself. That is my problem with a lot of christians, they don't think critically, rather they make an uninformed blanket statement.

f o r r e s t said...

On another funny note, my sister (I think) told me she has been hearing a lot of concern from christian parents about this new movie called "the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe." They don't think that we should allow our kids or us to see a movie with a witch in it. I wonder if they have ever heard of C.S. Lewis?

Idiots! (Nap. Dyno)

i know harry potter is not evil... i just like to tease the christians that like him because there is such a gay controversy over him! And I know everybody will get all freaked about defending him and stuff. You guys are funny... All of you harry potter people...

about darlene... it's not her fault she's so cool. I just think she's found favor in a lot of people... that's all.

f o r r e s t said...

Gigi, I know you are joking. I was taking new delight in understanding that your humor is sarcasm, so I threw some back at you with hillsong and darlene zarkin.

gigi said...

That's the bummer about sarcasm on-line... sometimes it's hard to get!

I don't get it... who is darlene "zarkin" (sounds like someone in your "evil-harry-potter-book") ;)

f o r r e s t said...

GIGi - I know you aren't usually mean so I'll assume all off colored remarks as a joke.

Did I say Zarkin? I meant Darlene Zanarnish.

gigi said...

why you gotta be makin fun of darlene's last name?

f o r r e s t said...

You know me, I always gotta be making fun.

It's a name that scares me. I don't know how to say it. I over come my fear and make myself feel better if I make fun of it. :)

Darlene Zuchinni is the worship leader of hillsong who likes to have her picture in various worship poses showing how passionate she is on all the album covers and has written Jesus' favorite song "Shout to the Lord of the Dance."

First on the Harry Potter thing, I haven't read it, or gone anywhere near it as it seems very weird to read a book about the Ocult. That being said, and now I know that I shall be harrassed as the Christian who doesn't know what he is talking about, I do understand how easy it is to make blanket statements about books or anything else for that matter. I understand that the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe sounds like a satinistic book, but having read it a million times and grown up with it, I know that it is actually C.S. Lewis's way of showing Biblical themes in a fictional way. The theme isn't about some wizard kid. Please, enighten me in how a wizard kid has an underlying theme of Biblical values. Wow, did I really just write all that. I guess it is good to be open and honest. I will wait for the wrath. :)

Ok, now that is out of the way, forrest, get yourself a dvd. I still have a VCR as well, because I haven't changed over all of my tapes to DVD's. I have too many hunting tapes, and kids tapes to get rid of it. A dvd player is cheap and it has so many more extras. Besides, you don't have to rewind. Recently we went on a family vacation to good 'ol Brandson. We took our lap top with the dvd drive in it and put it in the center of the seat between shanart and i and the kids did so much better driving. We only let them watch one movie, but they were so good for an hour and a half. Only 3 hours of whining! WOW! On the way back brother still complained about which movie we were watching, so only 3 and a half hours of whining. We had a great time in Branson. The kids loved Silver Dollar City (S and I did too). I got away for a morning and froze my butt off in the river, just off of the trout hatchery. I will have to blog about that on my site, but it was fun. I didn't catch anything, but it was cool seeing these trout swarm around my feet and jumping upstream. It is amazing how I loose track of what we were talking about. Shanart would say it is because I have a one track mind. God bless. d

I realize that I can't spell very well and after I posted I misspelled SATAN and OCCULT and many other words. I usually just write as it comes, and hit spell check. Where is the spell check on POST A COMMENT?! It should say, "Post a misspelled comment". Sorry for all who it really annoys when things are not spelled correctly. I was a sculpture major and I was casting or welding when you all were at your English class.

dw- the Harry Potter thing is too difficult to talk about here, but a couple of quick comments.

The stories are set in a fictious world where magic is the world view. This world is usually kept seperate from the real world, so there is a wardrobe per se to enter this magical realm.

The stories center around Harry who is going to school to learn to be a wizard and his adventures in Good vs. Evil. The whole magic is part of this wonderful world that she has created to tell these basic stories of loyalty, friendship, adventure, good vs. evil, and the struggles of school and growing up without your parents. One can use any avenue to tell these stories - a western, fantasy, sci-fi, present day urban, etc. She choose to create a magical world and that is what a lot of people have problems with. But the magic in this world plays only as a backdrop to the story itself. Instead of riding a horse, shooting a gun and wearing a cowboy hat, or flying a space ship in hyper speed, wearing a thin space suit and shooting a laser, in this world you can ride a broom, wear a robe, and use a wand. They are all the same elements to what the story really is.

The magic in harry potter is the same as science in the sci-fi books. It plays a specific funtion within the built enviroment and worldview.

I have not seen any talk of the occult or any worship of satan or endorsement of the dark powers in these books.

The magic in these books is very cartoony. For real, can anyone ride a broomstick?

My friend Dash is really smart and can explain this a lot better than I can.

I know it's not cool to like Branson, but once you embrace all the cheese, you can have a good time. We went earlier this year to SDC with the kids. Fun times.

Hey we have a DVD player, but we also use our VCR to record a couple of shows that are on when we are putting the kids to sleep.

The portable dvd does wonders for little kids on road trips.

Regarding the Harry Potter series, I (Shanart) have a few comments, not having read it, so correct me if I am wrong. The hero of the series is a wizard. Children are encouraged that witchcraft and wizardry is good, and pretty harmless in a subtle but powerful way. To my knowledge, there is no Christ figure or Biblical principles clearly portrayed as there are in the Narnia series, in which the Lion is as the Lion of Judah and there are so many other congruent Biblical parallels, I could never count them all. Authority figures are ridiculed in the Harry Potter series, from what I have read briefly. If there was no such thing as witchcraft and wizardy, then it would be harmless. We are so hungry for the spiritual world that we turn to fantasy or spiritual fiction to fulfill it instead of the real deal. I love the Narnia series and even the Lord of the Rings, but I have steered clear of Harry Potter because it seems to me like it deceives people and calls "good evil and evil good" (Bible). Strong statements ... correct me if I am wrong.

I don't know if Harry Potter has been in Jail, but I tend to agree with Martha! :) Thanks forrest for your comments. I am not sure I agree, but it is interesting to see your viewpoint. Thanks, dwhitey

In regards to Branson. What a hillbilly town. There is sure a lot to do though. Go-carts, amusement parks, golfing, wine tasting (Sharart, not me, I go for the sparkling juice) fishing, etc. If you can get over hearing country piped everywhere and the goofy names, it is a grand 'ol time. It is nice to be just a few over 4 hours away.

Also I wish I knew how to tape TV shows. I think it is my vcr. It worked for a while, but in the middle of my beloved Jayhawk game last year it stopped working. I love watching Alias, but haven't had enough time lately and we already talked about how I can't tape it. The only problem I have with Alias, is that Jennifer Gardner's outfits keep getting smaller and smaller, so it makes it harder to watch and remain white as snow. Another conspiracy theory? Hmmm, they have it out for us all.

To comment on Shanarts comments:
You have to understand that Harry Potter is a myth. His world is not like our world and their is a difinite crossover into the magical world. This helps the reader understand that the rules that govern our world is not the same as in a magical world like Narnia or MiddleEarth. Both Narnia and MiddleEarth have witches and wizards who are both evil and good. I read Harry Potter so I could find out what all the concern was about and to be able to make a critical judgement without a bunch of assumptions and heresay. People were saying it was bad because it had witches and wizards in those books. I was trying to make sense of this criteria of a book being bad or evil because of witches and wizards, because if that was the case some of our most beloved christian writers books would then be disqualifed. Good bye Narnia, good bye Lord of the Rings.

[The hero of the series is a wizard.]

Most of the people in the book are wizards, in this world you are born with the ability to be magical. They are going to school to learn how to use it properly.

[Children are encouraged that witchcraft and wizardry is good]

Kids may think it's cool but will be sorely disappointed when thier broomstick doesn't fly. I saw superman as a kid and wanted to fly and save the world. I dressed up in his suit and tried to fly. it didn't work, I was disappointed and gave up. The book itself does not encourage nor try to sell the wizardry as a way of life or a good thing. Everyone in this magical world is a wizard-that's the way it is. You're born with it. This world doesn't have a devil that you pledge your alligiance to become a wizard.

[there is no Christ figure or Biblical principles clearly portrayed as there are in the Narnia series]

These books are not trying to be an allegory to the bible, but I would say that there are a lot of positive biblical principles - standing up for what's right, loving your neighbor, guarding your heart against evil, being humble, and many more that uphold a christian viewpoint. I haven't finished the whole series so I don't know if HP will in the end be a christ figure. But there is a Dark wizard who is trying to destroy him. I don't believe that Lord of the Rings has a christ figure. I have heard before that the author JK Rowlings is a Luthern - what does that mean? Who knows? Another thing to consider is that she is British and the Brits have grown up with many myths and fables of witches and wizards as part of their history.

[Authority figures are ridiculed in the Harry Potter series]

I do not find an abuse of this, and if they do it to a teacher their is usually punishment envolved. It is a story about teenagers - it is to be expected. HP's parents died at a young age and he has to live at his aunt and uncles during the summer. They treat him badly and pretend that he doesn't exist, I cheer on any ridicule of those mean people.

[I have steered clear of Harry Potter because it seems to me like it deceives people and calls "good evil and evil good"]

Again in this world magic is just a device used to tell the same story of good fighting evil. The things that we value as good are still good their and the evil force we fight here, the fight them too.

Try reading the books and then you can make a good critical judgement.
